Hello, Iím Melissa Overton and I am so excited about returning to Manzanita this year! I will be teaching 4th grade in Room 12. This is will be my 8th year teaching, my 3rd year at Manzanita. Prior to coming here I taught in New Mexico and Texas. I have taught both second and fourth grade and I am also a certified bilingual teacher. I earned my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Early Childhood and General Education as well as completing a Reading Specialist Masters Degree from Sul Ross State University in Alpine TX.
I am originally from Texas where I met my husband. We were stationed at Vandenberg AFB five years ago and fell in love with California. I have been blessed with three children. A son, 16, who attends Cabrillo High School, my step-son, 15, who lives in Texas and my youngest who is 5 and will be a kindergartner here at Manzanita. We also have a maltipoo named Sophie who loves chasing her own tail!
Some of my favorite things are reading, listening to music, yoga, photography, and traveling. I have a slight coffee addiction and a bad sweet tooth when it comes to chocolate!
I grew up in a very small town and loved learning from an early age. I had a 4th grade teacher named Mrs. Pie (great name, right?); I absolutely loved her and knew I wanted to be a teacher just like her. I believe that in order to effectively teach my students, I must know as much about them as possible. I look forward to getting to know you and your family and working together to help your child succeed! I know that as parents, you are your childís most important teacher and I appreciate that role as we work towards their goals. I have very high expectations of myself as a teacher and also of my students. I want this to be an enjoyable year for them and expect them to take a bigger role in their learning as they begin 4th grade.
I look forward to a productive and fun year with your children!
