There are few places in the world a person feels they truly belong. For me – Manzanita Charter is one of those special places. This year, I am lucky enough to call this place “home” once again.
My name in Kim Hurd, and I will be a first grade teacher in Room 7. I look forward to making memories and progress with every first grader that sets foot on campus this year. I aim to make the classroom an inviting place for scholars to open their minds, take risks, and gain confidence. I believe in teaching the whole child, open communication with parents, and fostering a family-like atmosphere.
Family and home life are very important, for both my scholars and myself. Throughout the year, I make it a priority to understand where my scholars come from, to better understand their needs and interests. As for me, I grew up here in Lompoc and attended UCSB where I earned a B.A. in Anthropology and a Master’s degree in Education. In 2015, after two years of teaching at Manzanita Charter, the love of my life, Morgan, swept me away to the Midwest, where he worked to earn a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. We are fortunate to have ended up right where we belong, back on the Central Coast with our two-year old son, James, and a baby girl on the way. We enjoy outdoor activities, going to the beach, playing with our two dogs, and spending time with family.
My main goal for this year is to provide a home for each scholar who walks through the door; a place where they can learn to thrive inside and outside of the classroom, as part of a first grade family. I’m committed to making our classroom one of those special places, where each scholar knows they truly belong.
